Online consultation and telerehabilitation for sports injuries

If you have a muscle injury, a tendinopathy (tendinitis) or a running injury and can't come to one of the clinics where I work in Italy, you can have a telehealth consultation by video call, in English. You receive a rehabilitation plan built around your problem and your needs, to follow with the physiotherapist you prefer, including through telerehabilitation.

In brief
  • Dr Lucio D'Antonio, sports medicine specialist, offers telehealth consultations and telerehabilitation for muscle injuries, tendinopathies and running injuries, if you live far away, including abroad, or can't travel.
  • Medical assessment by video call at a fixed time, plus a tailored rehabilitation plan.
  • Consultations in English, Italian and Portuguese.
  • I reply to requests within 24 hours on working days.

Who it's for

For people who can't come to the clinic

If you live far away

In another part of Italy or abroad: you don't need to travel to get an assessment and a recovery plan.

If you work in an office

The consultation takes place at a fixed time: you connect from your desk, without leaving work.

If you can't travel

Because of work or family commitments, or because the trip to Modena, Maranello, Casalecchio di Reno or Carpi is too long.

If you live in Italy and prefer English

An English-speaking sports medicine doctor: the consultation, the explanation of the problem and the plan are all in English.

Conditions

Muscle, tendon and running injuries I assess remotely

Muscle injuries: strains and tears

Pulled hamstring, calf strain ("tennis leg"), groin (adductor) strain, quadriceps strain, muscle tear. We go through how the injury happened, I assess strength and movement, and I set out the recovery plan up to your return to sport. For a recent injury, an ultrasound scan, ideally 48 hours after the injury, shows where the tear is and how large it is: if you can, have it done near home and send me the report.

Tendinopathy (tendinitis or tendonitis)

Achilles tendinopathy, jumper's knee (patellar tendinopathy), tennis elbow and golfer's elbow, rotator cuff tendinopathy, gluteal tendinopathy (often called hip bursitis), high hamstring tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis. Treatment is based on progressive loading exercise, which can be set up and adjusted remotely.

Running injuries

Runner's knee (patellofemoral pain), IT band syndrome, shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome), Achilles and calf pain, heel pain. We look at your training load, running technique and footwear together, and plan a gradual return to running. If a stress fracture is suspected, you need imaging and an in-person assessment.

How it works

From request to rehabilitation plan

  1. Send your request

Fill in the form below. I reply within 24 hours on working days to set the time of the video call.

  2. Send me your reports and scans

If you've already had ultrasound scans, MRI scans or other consultations for this problem, email them to me before the appointment: I'll tell you how.

  3. Video consultation

We go through the history of the problem together and I guide you through some movement and loading tests, in English, Italian or Portuguese. You need a computer or phone with a camera and a stable connection.

  4. Receive your rehabilitation plan

Exercises, loads and progression built around your condition and your needs: the sport you play, the work you do, the goal you want to get back to.

  5. Choose who follows you

You can follow the plan with a physiotherapist of your choice, in person, or through telerehabilitation, supervised remotely by a physiotherapist I work with, who comes from elite sport.

When you need an in-person visit

What can only be done in person

Ultrasound scans and ultrasound-guided injections require seeing you in person. If the assessment shows you need them, I'll tell you clearly and explain how to proceed: a visit with ultrasound at one of the clinics where I work, or a scan near home.

Don't wait for the video call if
  • you have acute pain with significant, rapidly increasing swelling;
  • you can't put weight on the limb;
  • you suspect a complete rupture, with a gap you can feel in the muscle or tendon.

In these cases, get seen in person as soon as possible.

What the research says

Does telerehabilitation work?

For many musculoskeletal problems, rehabilitation supervised remotely in real time has given results comparable to in-person rehabilitation for pain and function1. A 2026 review on tendinopathy confirms this: results comparable to in-person rehabilitation and better than unsupervised home exercise, although the studies are still of limited quality2.

Pain, range of motion, strength and function can also be assessed reliably by video call; some specific clinical tests require an in-person visit34. That's why, when needed, I'll recommend a visit with ultrasound.

Cost and timing

How much the online consultation costs

130 € Medical assessment by video call and tailored rehabilitation plan, all included. Remote supervision by the physiotherapist, if you choose it, is agreed separately.

I reply to requests within 24 hours on working days. The appointment time is agreed in your time zone.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about the online consultation

Does telerehabilitation really work?

For many musculoskeletal problems, rehabilitation supervised remotely in real time has given results comparable to in-person rehabilitation for pain and function. The most recent studies on tendinopathy point the same way.

Can tendinitis be treated online?

In most cases, yes. Treatment of tendinopathy, often called tendinitis or tendonitis, is based on progressive loading exercise, which can be set up and monitored remotely. If the pain isn't clear or doesn't improve, I'll recommend a visit with ultrasound.

Can recovery from a pulled muscle be followed remotely?

Yes. For a recent muscle strain or tear, an ultrasound scan, ideally 48 hours after the injury, shows where the injury is and how large it is: if you can, have it done near home and send me the report. With the online consultation I then set out the recovery plan and the return to sport.

Can runner's knee, IT band pain or shin splints be assessed online?

Yes. By video call I assess pain, movement and strength, review your training load and set up a plan for a gradual return to running. If a stress fracture is suspected, you need imaging and an in-person visit.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No. The online consultation is a private service and doesn't require a referral.

What are telehealth and telerehabilitation?

Telehealth, or telemedicine, means medical care delivered remotely with digital tools such as video calls: here, the medical assessment. Telerehabilitation is rehabilitation supervised remotely by a physiotherapist, who guides and corrects the exercises in your rehabilitation plan and adjusts the progression.

What language is the consultation in?

English, Italian or Portuguese. Choose your preferred language in the request form.

How much does the online consultation cost?

130 euros, including the medical assessment by video call and the tailored rehabilitation plan. Remote supervision by the physiotherapist, if you choose it, is agreed separately.

How quickly will I get a reply?

I reply to requests within 24 hours on working days, so we can agree the time of the video call.

Can I have the consultation from my office?

Yes. The consultation takes place at a fixed time and you connect from your desk with a computer or phone, without leaving work. For some movement tests it helps to have a little free space around you.

Can I have the consultation if I live outside Italy?

Yes. The consultation takes place by video call, so you can connect from wherever you are, and we agree the time in your time zone. You can follow the rehabilitation plan with a physiotherapist near you or with remote supervision by the physiotherapist I work with.

Which problems is it suitable for?

Muscle injuries, tendinopathies and running injuries, when you can't come to one of the clinics where I work. If you have acute pain with significant swelling, can't put weight on the limb or suspect a complete rupture, get seen in person.

Can an ultrasound scan be done during the online consultation?

No: ultrasound scans and ultrasound-guided injections are done only in person. If the assessment shows you need them, I'll explain how to proceed, with a visit at one of the clinics where I work or a scan near home.

Who follows me during rehabilitation?

You choose: you can follow the plan with a physiotherapist near home, in person, or through telerehabilitation, supervised remotely by a physiotherapist I work with, who comes from elite sport.

Do you also see patients in person?

Yes: in Italy, in Modena, Maranello, Casalecchio di Reno and Carpi, and also in Lisbon. The in-person visit combines clinical assessment and ultrasound in the same session.
